Norwegian teen takes top poker prize

A teenager from Norway has scooped the top prize in the main event at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe, to become the youngest ever player to win the competition.

Annette Obrestad won the five-day No-Limit Texas Hold'Em Championship in London, beating 22-year-old British rival John Tabatabai to the £1 million prize money. She also won a WSOP bracelet, one of just 50 awarded each year.

"I never expected to win,'' said the 18-year-old, who started playing poker when she was just 15. "I'm speechless. I really don't know what to say."

Her victory helped her smash the record for the biggest ever single-event payout to a female player following Annie Duke's $2 million win at the 2004 Tournament of Champions.

Ms Obrestad, who is also the first non-US online poker player to be ranked number one, has now entered an endorsement contract with WSOP Europe sponsor Betfair.com, guaranteeing her a place on the tournament circuit.

The World Series of Poker Europe tournament took place in London's Leicester Square between September 6th and 16th.
