Russell Crowe wants poker machine ban

Russell Crowe is set to get rid of all poker machines in the South Sydney Leagues Rugby Club that he co-owns.

If the Gladiator star gets his way, all 60 poker machines will not feature in the club when it reopens in 2008, following rebuilding work after it went into administration.

However the board's chairman Bill Alexiou-Hucker is not happy at the move and predicted that the club would go broke within a year, as the poker machines took in $150,000 per month.

"We are not about to look at this through rose-coloured glasses. We don't want our members to have to go through two administrations," he told Macquarie Radio.

However, he added: "I don't want to pre-empt anything that the board may decide, because [Mr Crowe] might come up with something that is going to blow our socks off.

"The board will make its decision on sound business and economical fundamentals. With something this radical, you have to say, 'Show us the money'."

The move would be unprecedented to say the least as rugby league clubs have always relied on gaming cash.
