Betfair – Not Just Fair, but Generous with £1m WSOPE Prize

The World Series of Poker Europe main sponsor, online poker room Betfair.com has guaranteed a £1million first prize for the main event winner by adding £57,000 to the existing prize. The donation was made public just before the dealers’ cue to open the second day of play, and met an enthusiastic reaction from the players.

The World Series of Poker is no longer just a competition, but a global brand with revenues from television and other related media. The yearly event in Vegas is the biggest poker competition in the world attracting over eight thousand players at the last count, but venue restrictions in London have meant that the first ever WSOP to leave Vegas must be smaller, with only 350 players investing the £10,000 buy-in.

In some ways the London event is an improvement on the real thing: many players have bemoaned the insanity of thousands of players in a live tournament. However, that many buy-ins do swell the prize pool to gargantuan proportions, making multi-millionaires out of at least the top five players.

WSOP Commissioner Jeffery Pollack said of the London event.

“Nearly all of the world’s top poker players entered the World Series of Poker Europe, making it one of the most competitive poker tournaments in European history. Anyone who plays well enough to make it to the top 10 percent of the field deserves – and will get – an excellent return on their investment.”

The second prize is just over half a million pounds with 3rd standing at £381,910, fourth £257,020, and fifth £191,860. Payouts go down to 36th place at £27,150.
