Great Dane Wins PokerStars EPT Barcelona

Former chess champion and backgammon star Sander Lylloff from Copenhagen, Denmark, has claimed the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) title in Barcelona, after winning a heads-up duel with his roommate.

Lylloff, 25, walked away with the €1,170,700 first prize, after defeating good friend Mark Teltscher. The heads-up duel was settled when Lylloff moved all-in with his Jack Ten, to be called by Teltscher who had a pair of Kings. By the time the turn card was dealt, Lylloff had hit a set of Jacks, and with a dead card on the River, the title was heading to Denmark.

Teltscher, 27, who won the London EPT in 2005 said he was disappointed not to be the first player to win two EPT titles. “It would have been great to win, but if it had to be anyone else, I’m glad it was Sander.”

The 4th season of the EPT got underway with a total of 543 players arriving in the Catalan capital for the five-day event which boasted a prize pool of €4,181,100.

Some familiar names were in attendance for the event which imposed a significantly higher buy-in. Among those participating were Team PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu, Humberto Brenes, Isabelle Mercier and 2004 WSOP champion Greg Raymer, as well as Phil Gordon, Paul Wasicka and Johnny Chan.

The next EPT event is in London, from September 25-29, 2007, closely followed by the Baden Classic in early October.

EPT founder John Duthie said: “Season 4 has got off to a great start. With an increased buy-in this year for most events, we are going to be seeing far bigger prize pools and several new events have been added to the schedule.”

Final table/payouts:

1 Sander Lylloff Denmark €1,170,700

2 Mark Teltscher UK €673,000

3 Greg Dyer USA €388,800

4 Mika Paasonen Finland €301,000

5 Tronde Eidsvig Norway €250,800

6 Adam Junglen USA €196,500

7 Jedlicka Nikolaus Austria €154,700

8 Patrick Bruel France €104,500
