Two New Poker Halls For New Hampshire

Two commercial poker halls will soon open in the northern American state of New Hampshire with at least 35 percent of the take going to charity.

Jim Rafferty, the President of New Hampshire Charitable Gaming, has received permission from the Milford Planning Board to convert a vacant storefront into a poker hall in the south of the state.

Rafferty is a licensed primary game operator through the New Hampshire Pari-Mutuel Commission and plans to convert the vacant property into a charitable gaming facility named the River Card Room.

Paul Kelley, Spokesman for the New Hampshire Pari-Mutuel Commission said that Rafferty underwent a thorough background check and review including a 13-page application that delved into every aspect of the applicant's personal and financial life.

'We're trying to keep scoundrels out of New Hampshire,' said Kelley.

Under the state's gambling laws, poker and bingo halls can be licensed as long as at least 35 percent of the take goes to charity and a representative of the charity is present throughout each game night. Each charity is entitled to ten gaming days each year and, in order to keep the River Card Room open, Rafferty must line up a series of charities that will accept the proceeds.

According to town planner Sarah Marchant of the Milford Community Development department, the River card Room is to have 25 ten-seat tables for Texas Hold’em poker games. Rafferty has also received permission to run regular Texas Hold’em nights at the Big Bear Lodge in the town of Brookline where regular bingo games have been a fixture for many years.

'You have a different clientele with poker than you do with bingo,' said Thomas Goulden, Police Chief for Brookline.
