Swedish six face jail

Six men have been charged with being part of an illegal poker tournament in Sweden, after it was found that they did not have a valid licence and could now face four years in the slammer.

According to the Local, two men were charged for renting out the venue for the illicit tournament, while another pair was arrested for sponsoring the event and the final duo were local organisers.

The tournament concerned was a major event, which has led prosecutor Linn Scholander to call it "one of the largest cases of its kind".

The European Poker Challenge attracted 700 poker players to Grebbestad in Sweden in March 2007, and with a buy-in of 250 euros, this left a massive prize pool of around 175,000 euros when the 30 euro cut the organisers got of each fee was subtracted.

A prize of 50,000 euros was offered to the player who won overall, but play had hardly got underway before Swedish police raided the joint.

All of the accused have denied the charges, but the court will decide when they go on trial in November.
