Six Charged in Sweden for Hosting Poker Tournament

Six men have been arrested in Sweden this week in connection with hosting an illegal poker tournament. If they are found guilty, the men could serve up to four years in prison for their involvement.

The event was the European Poker Challenge, which took place in Grebbestad, Sweden on March 27th, was a €250 buy in tournament, with thiry euros out of each buy-in going to the organisers. Even with its prize pool of €175,000 and a first place prize of €50,000, the tournament never saw a champion as police raided the event almost as soon as the cards were in the air.

The men arrested represent a cross section of people involved in the tournament; two were charged with renting out the venue, two for being involved with the sponsoring company and the last two men were organisers of the event itself. The Swedish government has estimated that there are 100 underground clubs, and they are seeking to clamp down on what they perceive to be a growing gambling problem within the country.

All six have denied the charges and the trial has been scheduled for November. Prosecutor Linn Scholander said that 'this is one of the largest cases of its kind.'
