Seriously high rollers

The meaning of high stakes in a poker match was taken to a new level yesterday as competitors battled it out in an Extreme Poker tournament.

Six eager poker players sat dangling over a cliff in Sydney, Australia, each looking to win a seat at the Extreme Poker championships in the Caribbean, taking place later this year.

Concentration may be the key to success at poker, but simply holding onto their cards was enough of a challenge these competitors, as they sat on a platform overlooking the rocks over 90 metres below.

"The wind was so strong we thought the game was going to be called off," said eventual winner, Hugo Asenjo.

"It was really terrifying this morning when we first went out on the deck for a test run," he added.

The Extreme Poker championships will take underwater in the Caribbean, with players making their moves on the sea floor wearing scuba diving gear. At least no-one will have to worry too much about their poker face - they will no doubt be too busy keeping an eye out for sharks!
