Texas Holds ‘Em

In America, police in the southern state of Texas arrested 13 people last week suspected of operating an illegal poker room.

The Houston Police Department’s (HPD) Vice Division said that it raided a large gambling operation with the help of local detectives and SWAT officers after a month-long undercover investigation. It stated that the SWAT officers were called because the building housing the alleged poker room was secure and guarded by a private security firm.

Once inside, investigators said that they found dozens of people allegedly playing Texas Hold’em and spent more than one hour counting and seizing cash. While this variant of poker is legal in the state as long as the house doesn’t receive a cut, police stated that the people running this gambling operation were charging a rake believed to be at least $10,000 a night.

Police also stated that the gambling room had 14 poker tables, some of them with cards and poker chips, with dozens of people inside served with subpoenas to appear before a Harris County Grand jury at a later date.

In addition to the 13 arrests, a police spokesperson stated that arrest warrants were also issued on several others that will be picked up in the next few days. HPD said that there were dozens of large illegal gambling sites operating in Houston but that it wanted potential card players to know that if they are participating or running an illegal poker game, they just might be sitting next to an undercover cop.
