Burger King to play poker for boffins

Chief Information Officers (CIOs) from South Florida are being asked to join celebrities and poker fans at a charity poker tournament to help ladies get into the IT industry.

For the benefit of charitable organisation ITWomen CIOs from Burger King, Citrix, Northrop Grumman and AutoNation plus several cruise lines to help raise over $50,000 in scholarships to help 12 female school leavers study computers.

ITWomen will hold the CIO Celebrity Poker Tournament & Casino Night for the 4th year in a row on November 15th at the Sheraton in Fort Lauderdale.

Last year's poker tournament raised nearly $30,000 due to the participation of CIOs from South Florida's top corporations, which bought scholarships for seven young women.

Poker enthusiasts in South Florida can join the competition through a donation of $2,500 for a chance to win a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line and a watch from Monitca Jewelry.

Other prizes on offer are spa vouchers, romantic dinners and gift baskets.

"The goal of our efforts is to minimize the gender gap within the technology field by promoting professional education and training for women," said Victoria Usherenko, president of ITWomen.

"Our South Florida community recognizes the need to continue to develop our workforce in this area, and we've received enormous support from the private and public sectors to continue to provide these opportunities for continuing education," she added.
