Julian Thew Triumphs at Poker Stars EPT Baden

He has been there many times before but the elusive EPT tour title has continually escaped his eager grasp. Some might say he ‘Thew’ it all away. However, Britain’s Julian Thew finally put his past ghosts to rest by claiming the PokerStars.com EPT Baden Classic, and a healthy €670,000 to boot.

Since the tour started in 2004, Julian has managed to cash six times, making two final tables in the process. This time around, the father-of-two from Nottingham, emerged from an hour-long heads-up battle against 31-year-old Denes Kalo from Hungary when his A-8 stood up against Kalo’s A-5.

Julian said: “I pledged to pay off my mortgage before my 40th birthday and only had ten days to go when EPT Baden began. I still can’t believe I’ve won. EPT fields are so big now, with such good players - you think you can do it, but then you also think it’s just never going to happen.”

Julian’s first EPT success came in Copenhagen nearly three years ago when he reached the final table and finished a very respectable 4th. Thew also wins a seat at the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo in April.

The next EPT is in Dublin from October 30 to November 3, followed by EPT Prague (December 10-14). Satellites for Dublin, Prague, the Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure and the EPT Grand Final are running on Poker Stars now. Satellites for EPT Dortmund (January 29 – February 2) start on December 3, 2007.

Final table/payouts:

1 Julian Thew UK €670,800

2 Denes Kalo Hungary €375,000

3 Vladimir Poleschuk Russia €225,000

4 Thomas Fuller USA €160,820

5 Thierry Van den Berg Holland €132,900

6 Manfred Hammer Germany €105,000

7 Ted Lawson USA €83,600

8 Anton Allemann Switzerland €60,000
