Top Universities Forming Poker Clubs

The Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS) has announced that students at top universities are forming poker clubs in preparation for a national collegiate team tournament and conference next year designed to promote the educational benefits of poker.

GPSTS was started by students at America’s Harvard University under the leadership of Law School Professor Charles Nesson. It was later recognised as an official student organisation before being officially unveiled at a conference in Singapore.

“Poker teaches many lessons that are transferable to the challenges of life including strategic understanding of risk, resource management and self control,' said Nesson.

'When to hold 'em, when to fold 'em as the song says.'

The group said that students at leading universities such as Penn State, UCLA, USC, Stanford, Brown, Tufts and Boston University are all forming chapters of the GPSTS with international clubs being organised at universities in Singapore, Finland and Britain.

'The level of student response to our announcement of GPSTS is overwhelming,' said Nesson. 'Many people agree that poker itself, besides being fun, has an academic component that can bring great benefits to learning at all levels.'

GPSTS said that it hopes to have at least two-dozen chapters by the end of the academic year and plans to facilitate several academic panels that will explore poker as a tool for learning. The first panel is scheduled for this Monday to focus on life skills with Howard Lederer and Crandall Addington in attendance.
