Harvard Society Looks at WTO Vs US Dispute

In America, Harvard University's newly formed Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS) panel has announced that professional poker players such as Howard Lederer and Crandell Addington are to share their thoughts with some intellectual powerhouses this week.

Taking place at Harvard’s campus in Massachusetts, the event is to analyse how poker skills translate into life skills, the first in a series of several such explorations planned by the Society. Also on the agenda will be an examination of the World Trade Organisation dispute on online gambling and its consequences for the United States.

Harvard’s School Of Law Professor Charles Nesson and his students are the force behind the GPSTS. They formed the group earlier this year due to their belief that poker is a game of skill that can be used as a teaching tool at all levels of academia.

“The GPSTS recognises that poker can be a metaphor for skills of life, business, politics and international relations,” said Nesson.

Nesson said that students from universities around the world have shown interest in the GPSTS concept with chapters having formed at Penn State, Stanford, Brown, Tufts and Boston University alongside those at universities in Singapore, Finland, and the UK.

On November 10, GPSTS is to host a panel exploring the educational utility of poker will feature author and educator Jim McManus and poker ambassador Mike Sexton followed on November 16, the night before the Harvard-Yale American football game, by a poker tournament between Yale and Harvard.

Nesson said that there would also be a poker match between GPSTS members at the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Southern California Los Angeles (UCLA) on November 30.
