Poker fans rock around the clock

Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort in north-west Virginia is set to open its River Poker Room, which will offer poker fans the opportunity to chance their hand 24-hours-a-day.

The poker room has over 8,000-square-feet of floor space with 37 tables dedicated to the card game, meaning that up to 370 players can participate at any one time.

The new facility will employ nearly 300 people, from managers to dealers to security to cleaners.

Mountaineer president Ted Arneault said the new poker room was good news for the staff at the casino. "They now have a way to have a job that allows them to sustain a good lifestyle, a job that has a career path. They can really grow into management as the table gaming project starts to mature," he said.

Mr Arneault added that roulette and other table games would also be installed by the end of this year, creating another 400 posts.

But the new poker room will have stiff competition as Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Centre is opening the doors of its own round-the-clock poker facility with 20 tables and more games planned by the end of 2007.

But it may be that there is plenty of business to go around, as the Tri-State area has seen increasing demand for poker facilities since the game began being televised a few years ago.

"With the height of poker and people's interest in it, we're going to do very well," said George Arsenis, Mountaineer's poker manager. "Turn any channel on the television and there's a poker game going on."

Following two successful trial nights at the racetracks last week, West Virginia Lottery Commission officials announced approval of the operations.
