Chicks dig cards

High Heels Poker's inaugural event saw strictly girl-on-girl action at the weekend with Lisa Teebagy from Lighthouse Point bagging $5,407 for her win over an all-female field.

Some 103 women entered the first event of the High Heels Poker Tour to try to outwit their fellow females at Texas Hold'Em for a buy-in of $250 at the Isle Casino & Racing at Pompano Park.

The reason behind the creation of the poker tourney, which bans men from the tables, is "to empower women who want to become champions in the growing world of poker", the website claims.

Mindy Crown, of Davie, told the Sun-Sentinel that she relished the opportunity to play in an all-female field. "Some men can be arrogant and abusive playing with women, you know, set in their ways," she said. Ms Crown admitted that on her weekly outings to the area's casino's she did use "the playing-dumb thing" to outwit the men.

Rita Riddle confessed that it was the first time she had sat down at a poker table despite playing online for four months. She said that if men had been playing at the tournament, there was "no way" she would have entered as she would have found it "too intimidating".

The weekend's poker tournament is just the first in a series of High Heels events planned for the East Coast, with a tournament of champions scheduled for next autumn in the Bahamas.

Players can qualify for free entry to the tournament through satellites next month at local casinos.
