Poker pros gambling on the green

A group of nine world-class poker players have swapped their cards for clubs and their chips for tees to take part in the inaugural Doyle Brunson and Dewey Tomko Golf Invitational at the Bali Hai Golf Club near the Las Vegas Strip.

But far from the relaxing round of golf that many middle-aged men seem to enjoy, the buy-in to this tournament was $1 million in an extremely competitive field.

"Golf is another form, like an outdoor pool hall or an outdoor poker table, for us to compete in," Dewey Tomko told USA today. "We do this almost every day so we're used to it. But there's pressure. Unlike the PGA Tour, if we miss a putt, we could lose $1 million cash of our own money."

The second event of two will involve nine pairings buying in for $250,000 each in the hopes of winning the top prize of $4.5 million.

Brunson is also taking part in his own challenge, along with poker legends Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey and Erick Lindgren.

As the level of skill among the players is not as close as at the poker table, the field is evened out by allowing some to use a tee on every shot and carry up to 40 golf clubs.

"I can't handle playing the stock market for millions of dollars; it just drives me crazy," said Tomko, who won the last event with Brunson and Vince Van Patten. "But I can play for millions on the poker table and the golf course."
