Police Strike in Connecticut Poker Club Raid

In America, police in the eastern state of Connecticut claim to have busted an alleged poker and gambling ring that operated out of an abandoned basement and seized nearly $10,000 in cash and two televisions that may have been prizes.

According to The Advocate newspaper, police in the city of Hartford arrested nine men after officers raided the basement, known as The Spot, which had been operating as a poker venue for about one month.

According to Captain Richard Conklin, Head of the city’s Detective Bureau, police arrested the leaders of the business, Douglas Corbin and Rick Marro, during the raid last week and confiscated six legal guns.

Police also seized $9,300 in cash found on tables at the site along with slips allegedly listing point spreads for American football games and other sporting events. All nine men have been charged with one count of professional gambling with one also being charged with possession of narcotics after 1.5 grams of cocaine was discovered.

Conklin said that the basement had previously housed a slot-car racing track and that police were investigating possible ties to organised crime. 'The investigation is very much ongoing,' said Conklin.

Ledgers and a computer taken from the basement are to be searched for evidence with authorities stating that they had been monitoring the location for about three weeks before the bust.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in the State’s Superior Court on November 2 with the newspaper stating that Corbin and Marro appear not to have any previous criminal convictions.

'My understanding is this was an informal social club where a bunch of guys got together to play cards regularly,' said Lindy Urso, the attorney representing Corbin and Marro.

'I think the police received exaggerated information from their sources.'
