David Singer the Emperor at Caesars

Scott Fischmann, Justin Bonomo, Kido Pham… all huge names in poker. It was another top pro who was hitting the right notes though, when David Singer took down the 2007 Caesars Palace Classic.

An insanely tough final table started at a frantic pace, with four players being busted in the first twenty hands. First to go was Vivek Rajkumar, who was quickly followed by George Unich, Jose Valdes and Alex Bolotin, in that order.

This left us with five: Singer, Bonomo, Fischman, Pham and Tony Cousineau.During those bust outs, Singer had been accumulating chips, taking his initial 200,000 stack and running it up to 1.2m. Along the way he doubled up through Justin ‘ZeeJustin’ Bonomo, and the internet wizard never recovered, going out in fifth.

Cousineau was knocked out in fourth by the super aggressive Kido Pham, with all the money going in with Tony’s KK v Kido’s QQ. Cousineau’s delight quickly soured when the doorcard was a Queen, and Cousineau’s hit the rail. Singer then took Fischman out in third, but it took a little while longer before he could despatch of Pham. One hundred and four hands of heads up action, to be precise, and that was only after another bad beat, with Pham’s pocket Kings being run down by A9. No, not the ace – runner-runner gutshot straight, with the final board reading Td 8h 5h 7d 6d.

Singer wins a million, Pham took home $480,000. Even Julius would have been envious.
