Friday 26th October 2007 Swedes celebrate sweet poker wins
Two Swedes have been celebrating this week after claiming a pair of top poker titles and bagging a brace of prize money to boot.
Nineteen-year-old Swede Per Vennstrom claimed 21,000 euros in prize money for being crowned champion of the Everest Poker European Cup event.
Some 174 players competed for a dip into the prize pool of 100,000 euros in the second year of the competition, the final of which was held live in Vilamoura in Portugal.
But it had not looked a likely victory for the Swede, as at the Head's Up stage, Frenchman Richard Dutour had a massive chip lead with 1,075,000 chips to Vennstrom's paltry 320,000.
However, the talent of the Swedish player proved too much for Dutour, who had to settle for second, which won him 16,000 euros as consolation. "Per Vennstrom surprised all of us," said Jonathan May, Everest Poker property manager. "If he's got this much skill at 19, he's going to be well worth watching for in the future!"
Meanwhile, Johan Storakers finished first in the Swedish Open Poker Championship, pocketing over $185,000 in winnings, after already having cashed in the World Series Of Poker (WSOP), World Poker Tour (WPT) and European Poker Tour (EPT).
