Poker Dispute Has Air Traffic Control Up in the Air

Well, this is what the unions are for – forget arguments about overtime, contracts or working conditions. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association won’t back down when it comes to… poker tables.

The NATCA are now in trading blows with the Federal Aviation Administration over what one side describes as a ‘$3,500 poker table’ and the other says is a ‘modest $800 table and chairs’, purchased to boost controllers’ morale.

The argument began when the Atlanta Center air-traffic control team decided to spend some money on minor ‘workplace improvements’. Apparently the centre’s FAA manager asked Calvin Phillips, the NATCA chapter president for the Atlanta center, for advice on which table to pick out for the room employee’s often called the cardroom. Phillips took a dislike to the angle of the invitation, and claimed the manager’s assistant at the FAA mentioned they had ended up buying the most expensive ‘poker table’ they had looked at, which was around $3,500.

Following complaints from NATCA, an FAA spokesperson said that the existing order for a double sided table had been cancelled, which the FAA said cost around $800. A simple one-sided table will be ordered instead.

Victor Santore, VP of the NATCA's southern region, said the table incident suggests that the FAA went ‘on an end-of-year spending spree’, and that ‘their hands had been caught in the cookie jar’. That doesn’t bode well for their poker careers, does it?
