Poker to raise 50k for charity

The second annual Simon Poker Day looks set to raise more than £34,000 for charity thanks to donations from players and online casinos, it has been announced.

The poker day, taking place as part of the PokerStars.com European tour event in Dublin this week, is being run in aid of the homeless, with organisers optimistic of breaking the €50,000 (£34,854) mark in total donation.

One of the event organisers, Padraig Parkinson, said that he was hoping to eventually achieve total donations in excess of €100,000 thanks to the generosity of the participants.

"I'm confident the players in Dublin won't let us down as we aim for our target," Mr Parkinson said.

In order to entice players, a seat at the Irish Poker Championship due to be held in Galway next year has also been donated, offering the winner of the Simon Poker Day to opportunity to play alongside celebrities including the current world snooker champion John Higgins, and former snooker great Steve Davis.
