Online poker is becoming increasingly popular among PC users in Britain although many are not confident enough to play with real money, it has been claimed.

In the past year, a quarter of internet surfers have logged on to gaming sites to play poker and this can be attributed to the rise of late-night poker shows on television, according to a new study.

Mintel, which carried out the research, found that many PC users consider poker to be a "cool" form of gambling but do not know enough about the game to enter real money tournaments.

Matt King, Mintel's senior leisure analyst, said: "For the industry, it is clearly not ideal that so many players do not play for real money.

"But it does highlight that people do still feel intimidated by the game and that potential gamers are reluctant to dive straight in without having a chance to figure out the basics first."

He went on to say that once PC users have grasped the rules, they are likely to start laying down their money.

One of the most popular late-night poker shows to air in Britain in recent years is Late Night Poker, which saw professionals and amateurs alike compete in No-Limit Texas Hold'em tournaments.
