PPA Increases Pressure

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has announced that it is to target upcoming elections in two states with campaigns and is urging supporters of poker to make their voices heard.

In Kentucky, Governor Ernie Fletcher has cancelled a proposed referendum on the issue of casino and poker gaming. As a result, the pressure group said that over 1,000 pro-poker letters and phone calls have arrived at the offices of the Governor and other state representatives.

'Governor Fletcher is running not on his achievements of the past four years but on a campaign of distraction,' said Rich Muny, Kentucky State Director for the PPA. 'In the process, Fletcher has demonised the good folks who enjoy the game of poker.'

The pro-poker group has also started a pro-online poker campaign in Massachusetts as Governor Deval Patrick recently proposed a bill that would expand land casino gambling in the state but make it an offence to play Internet poker. Under the bill, offenders could be subject to a maximum term of two years in prison and a fine of $25 000.

'Ironically, the bill is pro-casino gambling legislation yet it makes Internet gaming a crime,' said Randy Castonguay, Massachusetts State Director for the PPA.

'We need your help and ask that you send letters to Governor Deval Patrick, your local State Representative and your State Senator. We have provided a standard letter, which will automatically be sent to the above politicians. We cannot stress enough how important it is for you to make your voice heard.'
