Robbery of American Poker Game Leaves One Dead

Frank DeSena, a former professor and mathematician from New Jersey, was shot and killed at an attempted robbery of a poker game in New York on Friday.

The game took place in a building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, and was comprised mainly of middle-class players spread over a dozen tables. The game even had its own guard in the lobby, but this didn’t stop a number of men from raiding the game. Wearing ski masks and armed with guns, the assailants entered the game and demanded cash to be put onto the tables.

There was a gunshot and DeSana was shot in the torso and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Some reports claim that $100,000 was stolen from the players, but this has not been confirmed by the local police.

The legality of the games is under question – whilst it is not illegal to play poker for money in New York, organising the games is. According to some of the participants, the house charged $5 every thirty minutes and pot sizes ranged from a couple of hundred to several thousand dollars. So far it is unclear who is responsible for organising the games.
