Online Casinos a Turn-Off for US Students

According to research conducted recently by the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Centre, online gambling by American university students, especially in the poker genre, is declining.

Long a platform for the industry's detractors, the researchers reported that online gambling among students has been declining since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) became law last year, disrupting financial transactions between American players and online gambling companies.

The Centre stated that its research measured the decline at 3.8 percent from 5.8 percent before UIGEA to just below two percent today. It said that UIGEA was the major factor as banks and law enforcement officials work together to establish online roadblocks for young people.

“You can’t just get on and give a credit card anymore,' said Dan Romer, Associate Director for the Annenberg Public Policy Centre. 'So that’s probably slowed down the enthusiasm on the part of some young people.”
