Former WSOP Winner Arrested

The winner of the 2005 World Series Of Poker’s (WSOP) senior event, Paul ‘Cigar’ McKinney, was arrested late last week in a police raid along with 15 others after allegedly taking parting an illegal poker game.

The raid took place in the southern American state of Tennessee with police seizing almost $20,000 along with playing cards and poker chips as well as betting slips for university and professional football games.

McKinney won $202,725 at the WSOP two years ago and was at that time the oldest winner, at 80, in WSOP history. Police said that they had received a tip-off that an illegal poker game was being held and allege that McKinney was playing poker with the others in Kingsport, a town in the extreme northeast of the state, when the raid occurred.

All those arrested were charged with gambling while McKinney and another player, Donnie Godsey, were additionally charged with aggravated gambling promotion for allegedly organizing and promoting the event. Police also stated that McKinney was charged with possession of 'schedule three' narcotics after pills were found in his pocket.

McKinney is now a resident of Weber City in the neighbouring state of Virginia and police stated that he had been released on $3,250 bond with no court date having yet been arranged.
