Biggest Pot on High Stakes Poker Aired

The stakes have been raised, and Jamie Gold has been going on and on about wanting to be the best bluffer forever now. Gold may well have thought his advertising was about to pay off in the biggest pot in High Stakes Poker history. Patrick Antonius on the other hand had other ideas…

The hand started with a standard pre-flop raise from the Finn, making it $4,000 to go with the blinds at $300/600 with a straddle of $1,200. Gold reraised to $14,000 with pocket Kings, and Antonius made the call with AJ.

Two to the flop of 3-Q-T saw the 2006 Main Event winner bet $15,000 with $30,800 in the pot. Antonius decided that with the deep stacks the implied odds for the call was good for his gutshot straight draw so called.

The king duly arrived on the turn, making Gold a set, Antonius the nuts and High Stakes producers delighted. Antonius led out for $45,000 and Gold moved all in for $341,500. Antonius immediately called, making the pot a little over $740,000.

While he may have been a 77% favourite in this spot, Antonius agreed to have the river card dealt three times, effectively making each of those cards worth $250,000. Amazingly, Gold hit a queen on the first river for a full house, and a three on the second to take two-thirds of the record prize pot. No hat trick for Gold, and Antonius managed to claw back $250,000 of the money.

AJ Benza summarised the whole hand best, saying “I tell you one thing: Patrick can take a punch. Imagine if that was Phil Hellmuth.”
