Massachusetts Governor to Install Online Casino Ban

In America, the Governor of the eastern state of Massachusetts has proposed legislation that would allow resort-style casinos into the state but ban online gambling.

Governor Deval Patrick’s Act Establishing and Regulating Resort Casinos in the Commonwealth contains a clause on page 28 that would punish anyone found gambling online with a two-year prison term and a fine of $25,000.

The clause had received very little attention before being brought to light by the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) lobby group late last week. It is now receiving large amounts of criticism from gamblers and politicians with the PPA urging Massachusetts’ online gamblers to make their views known.

The Governor is already experiencing heavy opposition to the proposal, which has yet to gather significant support. One of the biggest objections is to the validity of the plan's financial assumptions as Patrick estimates that the three proposed resort casinos would generate 20,000 jobs and two billion dollars in economic activity.

However, this assessment is being questioned with The Massachusetts Taxpayers Association announcing that the proposal's financial assumptions are not credible as the revenues are overstated and the State’s incomes from the venture will never be realised.

'They're short in all of the accounts,” said Massachusetts Representative Dan Bosely, Chair of the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies.

“There isn't enough for public infrastructure, mitigation or all sorts of social ills. It's pie in the sky and they're not going to do this.'
