Juniper Forecasts Strong Growth for Mobile Gambling

According to a report by England’s Juniper Research organisation, the increasing deployment of multiple mobile payment technologies and the liberalisation of remote gambling legislation is expected to push total annual wagers on mobile telephones to nearly $12 billion by 2010.

The report also stated that global gross wins from mobile gambling services would rise from $106 million this year to $3.2 billion by 2012 and that mobile lotteries would be the most popular service with more than 380 million users.

'Mobile lotteries have already experienced significant levels of adoption in the Far East while we envisage that European State lotteries will increasingly embrace the mobile environment in the medium-term,” said Dr Windsor Holden, author of the report.

In addition, while the UK is currently the largest single market for mobile gambling services, the report suggested that market liberalisation and proposed amendments to existing legislation elsewhere in Europe could see this market lapped. Furthermore, it suggested that the UK could be passed by the US as soon as 2012.

'The intimations from the US are that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act will be repealed or at least reformed,' said Holden.

'Should that be the case, then, facilitated by location-based technologies, in-state mobile lotteries, betting and possibly casino services will be available in that market by 2010.'

The report predicts strong growth in usage levels of both single-user games such as slot machines and of multiplayer gambling tournaments fuelled by greater 3G coverage and adoption.

“Many online casinos are now moving into the mobile environment while bookmakers such as Ladbrokes and Coral have partnered with leading applications providers to launch own-brand mobile casinos,” said Holden.

“Furthermore, the recent success of casino products from mobile-focused companies such as Probability demonstrates the latent demand for these kinds of services.”
