US Players Show Their Hands on Poker Ban

According to a recent survey conducted by RT Strategies National Omnibus Poll, Americans oppose the Government’s attempts to ban online poker and instead strongly support Federal regulations to control underage gambling and help problem gamblers by a two to one margin.

The bipartisan public affairs opinion research group stated that its poll was conducted from October 18 to 21 and involved a sample of 1,000 adults divided almost equally by Republican and Democratic political party preference and gender.

Although the margin was for error was calculated at 3.1, the poll found that 51 percent oppose Government prohibitions to online poker and only 21 percent approve of such efforts. Moreover, 56 percent of Americans stated that they strongly support Federal regulation of Internet poker as a means to control underage gambling and help while only 23 percent opposed such guidelines.

The release of the poll came on the eve of a House Judiciary Committee hearing on online gambling yesterday involving the Poker Players Alliance lobby group and moderated by Congressman John Conyers, a past proponent of a full study of Internet gambling.

'Chairman Conyers’ hearing is an important step toward educating Congress about the folly of an Internet gaming prohibition,' said former Senator Alfonse D'Amato. Chairman for the Poker Players Alliance.

'Such a ban won’t work and it is tremendously bad public policy. Only through proper regulation can we provide the proper safeguards for consumers and generate billions in additional and much needed tax revenue for this country.'
