Poker ‘Lock-In’ Planned for Charity

You get the usual array of socks, scarves and bath products. The television is invariably garbage, and the mere thought of another slice of that turkey sends you reeling. Yes, Christmas is coming, but the people of Whitnash have come up with an alternative way of spending their festive break.

Fred Hepburn is the landlord of the Hod Carrier pub in Whitnash near Leamington Spa, and he along with a dozen customers have a marathon card school planned for the end of December. Cards are expected in the air at 2pm on Saturday 29th December, and won’t expect to stop until 2pm the following day.

�1,500 has already been raised in sponsorship for the pub’s adopted charity, Myton House Hospice in Warwick, and sponsorship cash from individual players is also going to be added onto the tally.

Twelve two hour poker sessions with a Grand Prix style scoring system will decide a winner, who will be awarded a trophy for an event Fred hopes to become an annual tradition.

“I haven’t got a 24-hour licence so no alcohol will be served and there will be no spectators allowed between midnight and 10am,” he says. “But local restaurants will be supplying food through the night – you can’t play poker on an empty stomach!”
