Borgot-cha!

Arrests were made at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa this Wednesday following a tip-off from an informant. Four of the men arrested have gangster ties in the Philadelphia area.

Since March 2006, the ring had taken in sports bets on college and professional American football and basketball totalling $22 million, said New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram.

The exchanges of cash and casino chips were only spotted after an informant told authorities what to look out for using the casino’s eye-in-the-sky surveillance cameras.

The suspected ringleader of the operation is Andrew Micali, a 32-year old who is an associate of Philadelphia mob boss Joseph ‘Skinny Joey’ Merlino, according to the New Jersey law enforcement team. The authorities added that the Borgata had co-operated with the investigation and let the investigating team use the casino surveillance cameras.

A spokesman for the casino said that the ring involved “rogue employees”. No one was arrested on the casino floor, and the integrity of the casino’s gaming operations were never compromised, according to the spokesman. The casino employees charged included poker room supervisors, dealers and a bartender.

The ring was publicised by word of mouth amongst the illegal gamblers, who told prospective bettors whom to speak to in the poker room to place their bets. Losing bettors were also forced to take out loans from the ring at more than 50% interest to cover debts.

There is no legal sportsbook in Atlantic City, unlike Las Vegas.
