Poker lock-in for charity

Poker fans in the midlands can spend a marathon session in the pub, although no alcohol will be served and regular customers will be locked out.

The 29th of December will see a 24-hour Texas Hold'Em tournament taking place in the Hod Carrier pub near Leamington Spa to raise money for a charity appeal.

Fred Hepburn, of Enterprise Inns is holding the tournament to help raise money for the Myton House Hospice in Coventry, which needs £5 million to build new and improved facilities for terminal patients.

Mr Hepburn has already raised £1,500 from sponsorship of the event, which will go to create a 20-bed in-patient ward as well as a day care facility with the capacity for 15 patients.

However, Mr Hepburn said that the pub would not see normal service for the whole of the tournament. "I haven't got a 24-hour licence so no alcohol will be served and there will be no spectators allowed between midnight and 10:00 GMT," the Online Casino Press reported him as saying.

Although he added: "But local restaurants will be supplying food through the night - you can't play poker on an empty stomach."

The event will be split into two sessions, running from 2pm until 2pm the next day, with players raising while raising money all through the night.
