Supermarket shelf-stacker wins trolleyful of cash

A 19-year-old who works part-time stacking shelves in a supermarket to pay his way through university has won $96,000 at a poker tournament in Adelaide.

Daniel Booth has won the first ever Adelaide Hold'em Championship at the Skycity Casino, despite the fact he has only been playing poker for five months.

The student didn't even pay the $3,000 entry fee for the $340,000 tournament, instead winning a seat through a series of regional National Poker League events.

"I never dreamed I would win this tournament especially since I was up against so many of the world's best," he said. "I've only recently started playing poker and taking it seriously since the poker league started in Adelaide pubs and hotels in June of this year."

Booth was presented with the prize by Australian poker legend Joe Hachem.

"It's fantastic that such a young man who is playing his first live poker tournament for cash triumphs," Hachem said.

Despite the win, Booth returned to his overtime shift at an Adelaide supermarket, the day following his dream win.
