Monday 19th November 2007 Top poker brand has its chips?
Health officials in Arizona have alerted the gambling world and the general public to the fact that some popular poker chips may contain high levels of lead.
Paulson brand chips, which are used in many casinos, have been hit by the warning after lead levels were found to be particularly high, the Associated Press reports.
In a letter to the US Environmental Protection Agency, Diane Eckles, head of the Arizona department of health services' environmental health office, said: "We're bringing this to your attention because of the potential exposure to the most vulnerable population, the children of families that currently have this product in their homes.
"There is also a potential for the dealers to expose their families, specifically children, to this lead hazard."
Broadcasters KNX-TV tested 200 poker chips and found that all had levels of surface lead of at least 0.06 per cent, which is above the EPA limit.
The chief executive of Gaming Partners, which makes the chips, Gerard Charlier countered in a statement: "Although testing has proven the existence of lead in the chips, the mere presence of lead is not sufficient to prove there is a health risk.
"In fact, independent testing has also demonstrated that the simple handling of these chips would not produce any risk of health concerns to the consumer nor to the environment."
In addition, Mr Chariler insisted that Paulson's most recent batches have chips have been reformulated and now contain only trace amounts of lead.
