Poker among top sports leagues

The World Series Of Poker (WSOP) has been named as the 11th most admired sports league in North America out of 24, beating 13 traditional sports sanctioning bodies in a recent poll.

The National Hot Rod Association, Indy Racing League, PBA, Arena Football League, LPGA, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and others were all less popular than the WSOP.

Market research firm Turnkey Sports & Entertainment asked 12,000 sports fans for their pick of sporting leagues, and found that the WSOP ranked not far behind the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA, and the PGA Tour.

"We're honoured to keep company with the best sports brands in North America," said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the WSOP. "Thanks to our players, sponsors, media partners, fans and staff, we've entered the mainstream in another new way."

The WSOP was also the only poker franchise among the 24 leagues in the study.
