US poker fans to celebrate 2009?

The chairman of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has said that he expects online poker to be made legal in the US within two years, Online Casino News reports.

Speaking at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas, Alfonse D'Amato said he was confident that US poker fans would be able to play online within 18 months.

The former Senator based his predictions on pending sanctions by the World Trade Organisation following the government's current policy on internet gambling. Any sanctions which ensued could affect non-gaming corporations, which the White House could change the law to avoid.

Mr D'Amato was joined at the State of the Industry: Internet Gambling at the Crossroads conference by Terrence Lanni, chairman and CEO of MGM Mirage, Gary Loveman, chairman, CEO and president for Harrah's Entertainment and Andre Wilsenach, CEO of the Alderney Gambling Control Commission.

Online poker was seen by the panel as most likely to be legalised before other internet casino games.

However they agreed that while the US ban on online gambling was keeping reputable organisations from regulating, there is currently little player protection.
