Norway plans online gambling restrictions

Norway is preparing to introduce new measures that are aimed at cracking down on online gambling, according to Gaming Intelligence Group.

The country's minister for culture and church affairs, Tronde Giske, is introducing legislation that will prevent financial institutions from processing transactions to and from online gambling operators.

Mr Giske claims that the move, which could see a ban introduced as early as next year, is necessary to cut down on the country's gambling problems, which he believes have been growing steadily in recent times.

The proposals would effectively enforce Norwegian laws on the availability of offshore gaming services, which contravene Norway's strict regulation of the gambling sector.

If the legislation is approved, it would clear the Norwegian market of any competitors for the state-owned Norsk Tipping, which last year saw gambling revenues reach 1.16 billion euros last year.
