Swedish Online Poker Site in Trouble

According to reports on Sveriges Radio, tax authorities in Sweden claim that the former owners of online poker operation MultiPoker.com owe $6.7 million in unpaid tax.

The claim by the Skatteverket is only one facet of a major and continuing official investigation into online gaming in Sweden that has seen several major companies with interests in the Scandinavian country asked to provide information.

A veteran Swedish poker site, MultiPoker.com achieved notoriety by sponsoring projects such as the local Big Brother reality television series. The former owners, British Virgin Islands registered EPR Investments, sold the site to London-listed Party Gaming for $14.5 million in late-2005.

The tax claim is in connection with activities that occurred before the sale with Swedish authorities claiming that the company’s registration was a front to evade tax and legal liability. Reports suggest that the principals of EPR were arrested some months ago but it is not clear whether the individuals concerned are now free on bail.

Authorities claim that MultiPoker.com did not declare certain revenues and that the money paid by Party Gaming to purchase the site ended up in Swiss bank accounts without being declared to Swedish tax officials.
