Dan Carter uncovered

Poker ace Dan Carter has been talking about his childhood and how he came to be recognised as one of the world's top poker players.

The star, who earns in the region of £200,000 a year thanks to his ability with the cards, is still only 20 but is recognised as one of Europe's top talents in the game.

According to the Gloucestershire Echo, the poker champ failed his A-levels but clearly has a shrewd mind and has not come so far in poker circles through luck.

Speaking to the newspaper, Carter said: "Bad players blame luck but don't understand probabilities. There are so many compulsive gamblers it's depressing.

"But if they weren't there, I wouldn't make a living. I'm a risk-averse person. I don't do the lottery."

The Cheltenham lad explained that he picked up poker from watching his step-dad, who he says "didn't do so well", adding: "He was just a social player."

But at the age of just 17, Carter bought a number of poker books to study the game and although he had not spent much time studying for exams, the time in the poker books has clearly paid off.
