Principality's poker passion

Poker playing is becoming increasingly popular in the Welsh valleys, according to a new survey.

The new research has found that 31 per cent of people surveyed in the Principality played poker, compared to 27 per cent of Scots and just 22 per cent of English people quizzed.

Furthermore, the research found that Welsh poker players are interested in playing the game no matter what format it may be, with live events being just as popular as playing via the internet.

According to the study, there are more proportionally more poker players in Wales than anywhere else in the world, including the US, suggesting that the country could be Britain's own Las Vegas if given the chance.

Wales has contributed a number of things to the world of poker, not least one of Europe's most successful ever poker players, in the shape of Dave 'El Blondie' Colclough.

Originally from Carmarthen in South Wales, Colclough has been at the final table of World Poker Tour and WSOP events in the past.
