Welsh Poker Booming

New research conducted by Market researchers Mintel has revealed more adults are playing poker in Wales than anywhere else in Britain. According to the study, 31 percent of the Welsh people who took part in the study have played the game at least once this year, compared to 27 percent of Scots and 22 percent of the English.

The boom has been a godsend for Steve Bellis, the man from Wrexham who is behind the ‘Nuts Poker League’. Bellis was the only contestant ever to walk onto BBC2’s ‘Dragon’s Den’ and walk out with more money than he asked for. Although the contract fell through, the man from Bersham, Wrexham has been running games in pubs across the UK since.

Bellis said, “I think its popularity was down to TV initially and the fact that people come (to us) because they could play in a live game in a safe and secure environment.

“We look after everyone and make sure everyone is happy. Friends tell each other and more people come along.”

Since the passing of new legislation in the UK in September, low stakes games are now allowed in pubs, although he warned that there was still too much confusion over what is allowed and what isn’t. “I don’t think councils and the police actually understand the intricacies. There are tournament games, cash games, and no-limit games. They don’t understand what they are supposed to enforce.”
