Brunson mourns death of fellow poker pro

David 'Chip' Reese has died at the age of 56 after suffering symptoms of pneumonia and poker legend Doyle Brunson has been leading the tributes.

Reese won three World Series of Poker (WSOP) championships including the multi-disciplinary $1.8 million HORSE event in 2005.

"Many consider Chip the greatest cash-game player who ever lived," Jeffrey Pollack, WSOP commissioner said in a statement. "His victory in the inaugural $50,000 buy-in HORSE championship ... made him a part of WSOP lore forever."

Meanwhile, long-standing friend Brunson, said: "I knew him for 35 years, I never saw him get mad or raise his voice. He had the most even disposition of anyone I've ever met. He's certainly the best poker player that ever lived."

Although Reese has won many high profile poker tournaments, WSOP media director Nolan Dalla said he preferred to play high-stakes cash games out of the public spotlight.

"I've seen him with a million dollars in front of him," said Dalla. She said he would put in $5,000 chips "like he was betting a few bucks".

Reese was found by his son on Tuesday morning and also leaves a daughter and a stepdaughter behind, who will mourn him at a service in Las Vegas on Friday.
