Utah plays licence plate poker

Poker fans and avid skiers can combine their interests this winter, as Ski Utah invites driver to play 'licence plate poker'.

The Utah Division of Motor Vehicles has issued new licence plates featuring the tagline 'The Greatest Snow on Earth' and depicting Wasatch Mountains with a skier navigating the slopes.

As a bit of fun and a chance to win some prizes, Ski Utah is inviting players to send in photos of their new plates, with license plate letters and numbers scored like poker hands, with the player with the highest plate winning a prize.

The new plates comprise one letter followed by three numbers then by two more letters, and the characters act as cards.

For the purposes of play, Ace, King, Queen and Jack are represented by their initials with 'W' as a wild card and zero as ten.

For example, the plate A566RB would give a pair of sixes, J908XQ would represent a straight and A444BA would produce a full house, with a pair of Aces and three 4s, 4s high.

The driver with the best hand wins a new pair of Rossignol skis or a Burton snowboard.
