River Rock Poker Championships Decided in Style

In Canada, a 23-year-old former ice hockey player outlasted 642 other players to take the title at the British Columbia Poker Championships $2,500 Main Event.

Held at Vancouver’s River Rock Casino Resort, Daniel Idema began the final table on the Sunday with one of the highest chip counts and stayed strong to take the win and the $402,500 prize.

A resident of nearby Tsawwassen, Idema outlasted professional players Steve Billirakis and Greg Mueller and even produced pocket Kings on the final hand to take the win in dramatic fashion.

'I caught some major breaks in this tournament and I was fortunate enough to win,' said Idema.

'It's been a great experience. I never expected to make it this far.”

The Main Event was the final of four events being held at the River Rock, which saw a total of 1,700 players generate an impressive $2.4 million total prize pool.

'The popularity of poker is stronger than ever,' said Darryl Schiewe, Acting Vice-President of Casino Gaming for the British Columbia Lottery Corporation.

'Our tournaments continue to make poker history and attract some of the best players in the world. Congratulations to all the winners.'
