US Celebrity Criticises UIGEA

An American comedian has called the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) ‘misguided’ and defended the game of poker following a police raid on a charity game.

Drew Carey defended the popular pastime in a video blog piece entitled ‘Texas Close 'Em’ and criticised the US Government for its paramilitary-style raid on Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1837 in Dallas in April.

Carey first came to fame a decade ago via his prime-time television show The Drew Carey Show and currently hosts The Price Is Right. He stated that the online legislation along with the raid were part of a broader plan to shut down poker even in low-stakes games benefiting charity.

The video is being carried on Reason.tv and sees Carey interview a number of patrons of the raided game. All proceeds from the game shut down by police in Dallas were to benefit the VFW hall or other charitable causes but the site was forced to close due to lack of funds a few months later.

'Poker is about as American as baseball and apple pie,' said Carey.

'It was born here in America. Mark Twain loved it. He's a great American. Until recently, Supreme Court justices had a monthly game. They're great Americans. You'd think playing poker in the VFW hall would be about as American as anything you can do.'
