Paris awards young poker genius

Nineteen-year-old Annette Obrestad has been given the prize for Tournament Performance of the Year at the European Poker Awards in Paris, making her the youngest winner ever.

The Norwegian has been credited after her bold win at the inaugural World Series Of Poker (WSOP) Europe event, which Poker Europa Chief Nic Szeremeta described as "phenomenal" as he presented Obrestad with the award.

Many were surprised at the choice, after Carlos Mortensen and Bruno Fitoussi were named as favourites.

Mortensen won £1.96 million at the World Poker Tour in Las Vegas while Fitoussi achieved 2nd place in the WSOP HORSE event.

But it was Obrestad's success at the Texas Hold'em Main Event that impressed judges the most, after she pocketed over £1 million for her poker skills.

However Katja Thater pipped Annette to the 'Leading Lady' prize and the Norwegian also failed to gain the Rookie of the Year award.

But Obrestad wasn't bitter, saying: "I am so happy to win this award. I prefer this one than Rookie of the Year because I was up against such great players."

The mainly online poker player says she is "still learning" and looks to improve her live game even more in future.
