Major victory for minor poker fan

A Winchester woman has achieved a victory for her local pub as well as herself after reaching the finals of a national poker competition.

The landlord of the Golden Lion on Alresford Road in Winchester will surely be buying Liz Sheldon a pint after she represented the pub in the poker championship at the weekend.

In the final of the inaugural Ladbrokespoker.com pub poker championship, Ms Sheldon dug deep to come 14th out of a field of 500 poker players.

Playing with the big boys, it didn't even seem to matter that Liz had only been playing poker for the last six months, as she revealed that she's not about to turn pro.

Liz, a senior housing manager, told the Hampshire Chronicle: "I was up against professional players who do it for a living. For me, it's just a bit of fun. I enjoy it."

Tim Hore, landlord of the Golden Lion, added: "We're thrilled Liz has done so well in the pub poker championship."

While still a poker amateur, we assume that Ms Sheldon will not be heading off to Las Vegas to play with the high rollers any time soon. Caesars Place has raised its maximum bet limit to $50,000, which is the biggest in Las Vegas.
