Bad Day in the Full Tilt Office for Ivey

He may well be one of the best players in the world, and he might also be used to contesting some of the biggest pots poker has to offer. That doesn’t mean Phil Ivey likes to lose mind, and this Monday must have been a little painful for the man from New Jersey.

Two big pots against Ilari Sahamies, a.k.a. “Ziigmund” on Full Tilt Poker, did most of the damage. The pair were playing heads-up Pot Limit Omaha at the highest level Full Tilt have to offer, $500/$1,000.

To warm things up, Ivey lost a $213,000 pot when Ziigmund made his flush on the river. A few moments later, the pair would be contesting the biggest pot Full Tilt has seen thus far in December.

Sahamies raised from the button, making it $3,000. Ivey smooth called from the big blind.

The flop came 9h-9d-2h, with Ivey check-raising Sahamies’ $6,000 bet to $21,000. This didn’t deter the Finn though, who called the $15,000 more and thus took us to the turn.

The 2c made for a double-paired 9-9-2-2 board, and Ivey decided to lead out for $45,000. Sahamies moved in for fractionally under $170,000. Ivey made the call and we had a pot of $321,983. Ivey’s trip nines with top kicker (9c-5d-Ad-Kh) were drawing very slim against Sahamies’ flopped full house and turned quads, with Sahamies tabling 2s-2d-As-5c. Ivey had the remaining nine in the deck to aim for, but when the 4c came, the pot headed towards Finland.
