Short Stacked Turton Fights Back to Win APAT UK Amateur Championship

The G Casino in Manchester was host to the latest leg of the Amateur Poker Association and Tour, the UK Amateur Championship. Over 200 runners took part, and it was the guy who finished at the bottom of the ladder climbed all the way to the summit.

Starting with 26,000 chips, Turton went on a great run to secure himself a seat at the final table with the chip counts looking like this:

Mark Hayter (Southampton) — 370,000

Rob Plaistow (Weston-Super-Mare) — 310,000

Graham Wills (Caerphilly) — 255,000

Lee Baron (Bradford) — 213,000

Kevin Davies (Cardiff) — 203,000

Stuart Hopkin (Nottingham) — 200,000

Simon Aukland (Solihull) — 191,000

Simon Turton (Huddersfield) — 151,000

Lee Smith (Huddersfield) 134,000

Still one spot from the bottom and blinds up at 6,000/12,000, the eventual champion had his work cut out for him, and when down to six chip leader Plaistow had almost half of the chips in play after knocking out the first three players. Turton then got most of Hayter’s chips, whilst Plaistow had a collapse to end up in fifth.

By now Turton had crept up into second spot, and when Davis went out in fourth, Turton dumped Aukland out in third to get himself heads up for the title.

The key hand of the Championship came about after Turton was put all in by Hopkin. Turton’s tournament life was on the line with his top pair facing a big draw in the form of Hopkins overcard and nut flush draw. The pair held up, and the tournament was clinched after Turton’s A-Ts held up in the final hand of the night, leaving the man from Huddersfield to be crowned APAT UK Amateur Poker Champion for 2007.
